I dug out the previous trials I did on the pipe bending. They were almost convincing, although I recall it was the devil's own job to bend the damned things.
It may be that the pipes I was using were more suited to structural constructions. Most exhausts are buit in 1.5mm wall thickness, possibly slightly less. And what do we have here?
FFS, it seems I bought a load of 2.5mm wall thickness. No wonder I was straining a gut.
Here's the "downstream" section that does the "4 into 1" bit. I previously identified (and numbered) the main bends with a view to replicating each of them individually, then welding them together.
Beyond that, there are 2 pipes to the rear of the vehicle and finally 2 tail mufflers (items 5) and tailpipes.
There's actually a large silencer box that acts on both pipes (item 4), each with 3 sections of labyrinths and chambers. Apparently it was designed so that the car "sounded like a Ferrari". Well I hacked it apart long ago and fitted a straight through gauze pipe to each run - I can do without a massive back pressure.
You can see some of the pipe sections I bent up previously. And here are the 3 dies I made for the bending tool. I must have had a stroke of sanity, as these are 32, 38 and 45mm diameter (aka 1.25", 1.5" and 1.75").
The guts of the machine have been sulking in this broken shopping basket since we moved back from Canada just over a decade ago. There's a kind of ratchet mechanism that you operate with an extension pole. And that circular thing is for measuring the angle of the bend.
And here's the stand (in blue) that that mechanism mounts on. I will need to anchor it down before I can use it. That will require some holes in the floor and some wall bolts.
Like this:
Good. I have some 32mm and 38mm 304 stainless pipe heading this way. I may need to get the drill out and see about fixing the stand in readiness. Luckily the floor has ~6" thick concrete with steel mesh reinforcement, so shouldn't complain. The main issue is whether or not I manage to miss the steel when I drill the holes. Place your bets....
